How Much Does a Divorce Cost?

Divorce Cost

How much a divorce costs is often a huge concern for anyone who is considering filing.  No matter how much money you have, the last thing you want to do is blow it all in legal fees in a divorce.  For those who are on a tight budget, the money concerns are even greater.  The truth is it is hard to guess how much your divorce will cost because of several factors.

  • The easiest way to keep your divorce cost down is to work towards an amicable divorce with your spouse. This means that you work together to create a settlement that you are both happy with.  You can print divorce papers online to help you work through the process.  Even if you are both happy with the agreement, it is a good idea to have an attorney look at it to be sure you have addressed everything you need.  Many lawyers will do this for a relatively low amount – and you can split the cost between you.
  • A contested divorce – or one in which you and your spouse have to go to court and fight over details – can cost thousands of dollars and take years to finalize. Most of the costs are in lawyer fees so the more you argue, the more you pay.
  • If you want to file an amicable divorce, but simply cannot compromise, hiring a mediator is a great option. A mediator is a neutral third party who listens to what each of you wants and/or needs from the marriage and offers suggestions for your settlement.  A mediator can cost a few hundred dollars, but is still much cheaper than fighting in court.
  • Remember that you each will have court fees that have to be paid. If you have to sell any property, you may have fees for that sale.  One of you will have to buy or rent another place to live.  You may have to find new insurance plans and purchase needed household items.  You may have fees for accountants or counselors for your children.

To keep your divorce costs down, the best thing to do is swallow your pride and pain and decide to compromise with your spouse in regards to the settlement.  It may be the hardest thing you have ever done, but you will save a ton of money and have your divorce finalized much sooner so you can move on to your happier life.
