Finding a divorce attorney can be scary and stressful. You may be worried about finding one you can trust or one that will work for you and abide by your choices. Or you may be looking for one that will fight for you and everything you want. Regardless, the easiest way to start looking for a divorce attorney is to ask friends and family if they know anyone who specializes in divorce or family law.
Remember that when you ask people for referrals, whether they like someone or not will depend on their own situation. A certain lawyer may not be liked because he/she represented a person’s ex or another one may be recommended because he/she “stuck it” to an ex. Take any opinions you get with a grain of salt and form your own opinions in person.
Many divorce attorneys will meet with you for a first consult for little to no fee. Take advantage of this and go meet each one. Only by speaking to them in person will you be able to find the best one for you. You will need to make sure you are comfortable with this person because during the course of your divorce, you will have to disclose very personal information to your attorney. This will be hard enough to do without having an attorney that makes you uncomfortable or that you don’t feel as if you can trust.
Many people choose an attorney based on only the fees that will be charged. While it is understandable that you want to save as much money as possible, you need an attorney who cares about you and your family. Your divorce will be stressful enough without feeling as if your lawyer doesn’t care at all.
If you have special circumstances in your life, such as special needs children, you may want to look for an attorney who has experience in handling divorces with those circumstances. Long term planning can be very different for families like yours and there may be many things that should be in the divorce settlement that you may not think of.
Once you have decided to get a divorce, you may feel rushed to get it started. Take your time choosing your attorney and don’t settle for the first one you meet. This decision is too important to make quickly.
