When you are going through a divorce, it can seem like everything is out of control in your life. You may try to control anything, just to feel better about this confusing time in your life. In this case, you may unknowingly make a bad decision and your lawyer is trying to help you.
Unless you are an attorney, it is unlikely that you know everything you need to know about the process of divorce. You have hired an attorney to be your expert and to advise you on the best way to proceed with your divorce. In most cases, you should listen to the advice you are paying for. However, you are in full control of your divorce.
If for some reason, you want something that your divorce attorney is advising against, the first thing you need to do is discuss the reasoning with your lawyer. He/she may understand that what you are asking for will add months to the process or cost you in the long run. Remember, your divorce will affect you for the rest of your life and you should listen to your attorney.
On the other hand, lawyers are not always right and if you feel strongly about something, you need to speak up. Do not be afraid to voice your opinions and your concerns. Keep asking your lawyer why he/she feels as they do. If you still do not understand, you may want to talk to another attorney and see what their advice is. This is your divorce – not your attorney’s. This is your life and you have the right to understand and agree with everything that is being written.
The bottom line is, your attorney has the experience and knowledge you need to get what you want and need from your divorce. You should take into consideration what you are told before making any decisions. However, your attorney should follow your instructions, even if he/she doesn’t agree with you. Ultimately, every decision in your divorce should be yours and you should be respected for those choices. Find another attorney if you feel as if the one you have hired is not following your directions or is disrespectful to you.
