There are not many things in life that are more stressful than a divorce. The death of a family member is about the only thing worse. Even if you want the divorce, it is more stressful than anyone who has never had to do it can believe. There are so many decisions that need made and basically, you feel as if your life is on hold until everything is settled. The situation is even harder if you have children to worry about.
The first thing you need to understand is that no matter how much you think you cannot deal with the divorce, you will get through it. Another thing is people often say it can’t be that bad to you or that you will be fine because they have no idea what else to say. It is hard and you will have to find techniques to help you and your family through this difficult time.
For starters, try to keep as much of the same routine as you have always had. Get up, take care of the children and go to work, just like you have to do. You won’t feel like it – you may only feel like lying around crying and that’s ok. Cry when you need to, but know that you have to get moving forward in your life. You are not letting your children skip school because of the divorce, so you can’t skip work either.
The more you sit and think about the divorce, the harder it will be to move on. Do your hobbies or start new ones. Begin an exercise program or join a church. Even if all you can handle is to walk around your yard, get out of the house and do it. Some days, walking to the mailbox might be the most difficult thing you do, but you need to make yourself get dressed and get moving.
Make sure that you are getting enough sleep and are eating right. If your body doesn’t get enough rest and proper nutrition, you will feel half-sick. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of your children. If you don’t want to eat for your own health, think of them.
If you are still having a hard time or depression has settled on you and you can’t shake it, make an appointment to see your doctor. Some people need counseling or anxiety medication when they are going through a divorce. This is nothing to be embarrassed about. You need to do what you have to when you are dealing with divorce.
