The Cost of a Divorce

The cost of a divorce is nearly impossible to estimate.  Many factors will affect the total cost and several of those cannot accurately be measured until you are in the process.  Lawyer fees, court costs and other fees will depend on how well you and your spouse can agree and make decisions.  The personal cost of a divorce cannot be measured until it is all complete.

The best way to save money on the cost of a divorce is to work with your spouse to make decisions.  If you can achieve an amicable divorce, you will save thousands in lawyer fees and court costs.  If both spouses want to fight over everything, the cost will skyrocket.  Amicable divorces also save in the emotional cost of a divorce.  Hurting your spouse may be all you can think about as you file for divorce, but if you can work together one last time, you both can save a substantial amount of money.

There are “do it yourself” divorce options available, but unless you are sure you understand what you are signing, this may not be the best option for you.  Also, some states will not recognize the paperwork in these kits and you will need to obtain the services of an attorney who can handle family law.  Again, if you and your spouse can work together, the lawyer fees will be minimal and you can be confident that your best interests are in the contract.  In the case of divorce, especially those that involve children, cheaper is not always the better option.  The cost of your divorce should not be a factor when making decisions for your children.

An amicable divorce may cost you a few hundred dollars.  If you and your spouse cannot agree on anything, and need to obtain lawyers to fight about it in court, the cost could easily go into the thousands of dollars.  You will need to decide if fighting for years is worth the personal and monetary costs of divorce.  Besides the money you will be spending, the stress in your daily life can be costly to your health.  Think about that before fighting over a piece of furniture that you do not like anyway.

When most people think about the cost of a divorce, they are only considering the price tag in lawyer fees and court costs.  Remember that such a difficult time in your life will cause many emotional issues you will need to go through.  The cost of a divorce cannot be measured in only money.  The social, mental and emotional aspects need to be considered as well.
