Do I Have To Hire A Lawyer?

There are many websites devoted to divorce on the internet. Some offer to fill in forms for filing for divorce for you while others just let you download the needed paperwork. If you and your spouse are working towards an amicable divorce, this may be a way to save a little money. The problem is, no one will look at your paperwork until a judge does and if it isn’t done correctly, you may end up hiring a lawyer anyway.

There are so many aspects of divorce that people do not think about unless they are a lawyer. While it is great that you and your spouse are working towards an amicable divorce, do you know enough about what is fair to sign an agreement without having a lawyer look it over? Most divorcing couples think about child and spousal support and child visitation, but what about retirement plans, income taxes and Social Security?

These are just a few reasons that you should have an attorney look over your paperwork before you submit it to your local clerk of courts office. A lawyer can tell you if the agreement seems fair and advise you of any details you may have forgotten about when you filled out the papers. Even if the agreement seems fair to you, it is always a good idea to have a fresh set of eyes look at it.

Most lawyers will not charge much to look at the divorce papers you printed from the internet. It is understandable that you do as much online as you can, but remember that the internet is not always the best place to find the information you need. Some sites may not be as reliable as you think and could end up costing you a lot of money and adding months of stress before your divorce is finalized.

Contrary to what some people believe, you cannot obtain a divorce online. You can only print the forms you may need. Trying to find ways to save money during your divorce is sensible, but skimping on a lawyer’s advice is not a good idea. Their knowledge is invaluable during this difficult time of your life.
